The Alignment Test

I've always thought that deciding your D&D alignment for a Warcraft character was a difficult task. The character's stance on the war of the Alliance and Horde complicate this matter significantly, in my opinion.

A nice, quick online quiz can be taken to see what the ballpark D&D alignment for your character might be.

    http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20001222b

Bear in mind that this is definitely not going to be the best way to define your character's alignment with certainty. The test just gives a good starting point for helping develop the character and decide for yourself, or something to keep in mind when making difficult moral decisions.

I've yet to take it for all my characters, but for Janderius, the result was "Lawful Good."

A lawful good character acts as a good person is expected or required to act. She combines a commitment to oppose evil with the discipline to fight relentlessly. She tells the truth, keeps her word, helps those in need, and speaks out against injustice. A lawful good character hates to see the guilty go unpunished. Lawful good is the best alignment you can be because it combines honor and compassion.

This is obviously a very debatable result, if you know much about my character. But for this test, try to remember that this alignment deals with the character's general behavior with the most basic moral dilemmas. Janderius has done some very savage things in his dealings with the Horde, but also shows a very intense compassion for the general populace of the Alliance. Most of the questions relate to the kind of interractions that the character would have within his own faction.

Some things about Jander that likely affected the results of the test:

    • Janderius has a very strong respect for the King of Stormwind, and all that would uphold his laws (even Sirithil... sort of.)
    • He is a very hard worker, having started with very humble beginnings.
    • He has a great relationship with his family, and oldest friends.
    • He has been guilty of a very technical crime, and ultimately turned himself in when he became aware of its severity.
    • He is very committed as a fighter, doing what he sees as right. Unsavory acts against the horde are seen as necessary evils that he commits (in his mind) for the wellbeing of Alliance civilians. He still fights with honor, and does not "enjoy" killing Horde soldiers. Even if he has an altered perception of their threat to the Alliance.
    • Examples of his compassion for civilians of the Alliance and the needy include his work for the Westfall Project, his efforts to improve quality of life and better treatment for Machiavelli's serfs, and the fighting that he does on a regular basis, for the sake of the Alliance.
    • He would defend Stormwind to his very last breath.
    • He isn't necessarily overly intolerant or vengeful, but just defends his people very fiercely, without taking chances.
He is very self confident, pushing to arrogance on most occasions. It's easy to note the darker sides of him, in comparison to most characters, especially if you do not know him well. However, most who are close to him do acknowledge that he is overall a very good person.

We have some very complex and well developed characters in Earthen Ring, and I'm interested to see where most of them would fall in this test.

Wyn proved to be Chaotic neutral which I don't think is very debatable. Everyone knows she has no love for either alliance or horde, that she's very individualistic. She will always think of herself and her loved ones first, then maybe think of the community. Everyone also knows that she is attracted to the extreme, such as dangerous activities like sky diving, bar brawling, and doing things just to "enjoy" life.

Lawful Good ^.^ It makes sense that a magistrate be lawful. He's good due to his communal, virtuous upbringing.

Based on your answers to the quiz, your character’s most likely alignment is Neutral.

    Neutral

A neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. She doesn’t feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs. evil or law vs. chaos. Most neutrality is a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality. Such a character thinks of good as better than evil. After all, she would rather have good neighbors and rulers than evil ones. Still, she’s not personally committed to upholding good in any abstract or universal way. Some neutral characters, on the other hand, commit themselves philosophically to neutrality. They see good, evil, law, and chaos as prejudices and dangerous extremes. They advocate the middle way of neutrality as the best, most balanced road in the long run. The common phrase for neutral is "true neutral." Neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you act naturally, without prejudice or compulsion.

Wonderful. That's exactly how I mean to play him.

Fox turned out to be True Neutral. She's been walking the line between Chaotic and True Neutral for a while now, but she's recently become...well, less of an amoral jerk, put bluntly.

Curiously, Kormok came out as Lawful Good this time. Last time I took, it, he was Lawful Neutral. Interesting!

    Neutral Evil

A neutral evil villain does whatever she can get away with. She is out for herself, pure and simple. She sheds no tears for those she kills, whether for profit, sport, or convenience. She has no love of order and holds no illusion that following laws, traditions, or codes would make her any better or more noble. On the other hand, she doesn’t have the restless nature or love of conflict that a chaotic evil villain has. The criminal who robs and murders to get what she wants is neutral evil. Some neutral evil villains hold up evil as an ideal, committing evil for its own sake. Most often, such villains are devoted to evil deities or secret societies. The common phrase for neutral evil is "true evil." Neutral evil is the most dangerous alignment because it represents pure evil without honor and without variation.

Neutral Evil is called the "Malefactor" alignment. Characters of this alignment are typically selfish and have no qualms about turning on their allies-of-the-moment. They have no compunctions about harming others to get what they want, but neither will they go out of their way to cause carnage or mayhem when they see no direct benefit to it. They abide by laws for only as long as it is convenient for them. A villain of this alignment can be more dangerous than either Lawful or Chaotic Evil characters, since he is neither bound by any sort of honor or tradition nor disorganized and pointlessly violent.

Examples are an assassin who has little regard for formal laws but does not needlessly kill, a henchman who plots behind his superior's back, or a mercenary who switches sides if made a better offer.

    Lawful Neutral

A lawful neutral character acts as law, tradition, or a personal code directs her. Order and organization are paramount to her. She may believe in personal order and live by a code or standard, or she may believe in order for all and favor a strong, organized government. The common phrase for lawful neutral is "true lawful." Lawful neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you are reliable and honorable without being a zealot.

(Yup. Thats exactly what I was going for. That is how Val is on many regards, but not all.))

    Chaotic Evil

A chaotic evil character does whatever his greed, hatred, and lust for destruction drive him to do. He is hot-tempered, vicious, arbitrarily violent, and unpredictable. If simply out for whatever he can get, he is ruthless and brutal. If he is committed to the spread of evil and chaos, he is even worse. Thankfully, his plans are haphazard, and any groups he joins or forms are poorly organized. Typically, chaotic evil people can only be made to work together by force, and their leader lasts only as long as he can thwart attempts to topple or assassinate him. The demented sorcerer pursuing mad schemes of vengeance and havoc is chaotic evil. Chaotic evil is sometimes called "demonic" because demons are the epitome of chaotic evil. Chaotic evil is the most dangerous alignment because it represents the destruction not only of beauty and life but of the order on which beauty and life depend

((Hmmm. Kinda What I was looking for. But not the haphazard part. The rest is pretty good. Lol))

Lawful Good is known as the "Saintly" or "Crusader" alignment. A Lawful Good character typically acts with compassion, and always with honor and a sense of duty. A Lawful Good nation would consist of a well-organized government that works for the benefit of its citizens. Lawful Good characters include righteous knights, paladins, and most dwarves. Lawful Good creatures include the noble golden dragons. Lawful Good outsiders are known as Archons.

Lawful Good characters, especially paladins, may sometimes find themselves faced with the dilemma of whether to obey law or good when the two conflict—for example, upholding a sworn oath when it would lead innocents to come to harm—or conflicts between two orders, such as between their religious law and the law of the local ruler.

Ambrosine was of lawful good alignment as a paladin, and remains so even as a death knight--though her morals have...adjusted, and it is a great strain on her will. She restricts her killings to demons, cultists, rabid animals, and other known ne'er do wells.  Although definitely less nice than she used to be (as Calithos can attest), being openly hostile where she used to hold her tongue, the core of her lawful good nature remains.

...most of the time. She has a couple of instant-enrage buttons that if pushed, well, all hell breaks loose. Guilt stalks her often.

Mina is neutral good. She feels less beholden to laws than she does to her own nature--fortunatley it is in her nature to help others. Provided, of course, that she deems you worth helping.

Lawful Neutral is called the "Judge" or "Disciplined" alignment. A Lawful Neutral character typically believes strongly in Lawful concepts such as honor, order, rules and tradition, and often follows a personal code. A Lawful Neutral society would typically enforce strict laws to maintain social order, and place a high value on traditions and historical precedent. Examples of Lawful Neutral characters might include a soldier who always follows orders, a judge or enforcer that adheres mercilessly to the word of the law, and a disciplined monk.

Characters of this alignment are neutral with regard to good and evil. This does not mean that Lawful Neutral characters are amoral or immoral, or do not have a moral compass, but simply that their moral considerations come a distant second to what their code, tradition, or law dictates. They typically have a strong ethical code, but it is primarily guided by their system of belief, not by a commitment to good or evil.
