What is a "Mary Sue" & Is your character a "M

  • January 23, 2012 6:17:22 AM EST
Interesting. I went in there and checked as many of them as could even VAGUELY apply, and still only scored a nine.

Though the survey could use quite a bit of updating. If I knew how to HTML, I'd whip up a new one.

The most Sue-ish thing Wen ever did was meet Anduin Wrynn - I made a journal post about it a while back. I got a 4 otherwise, though. Still nice to see even if the test itself is a bit old.

What would be better is someone who knows your character asks the questions. Also, any old character would probably be up in the twenties based soley on the plots that have evolved over the years. It's just I've noticed some people lie just to get low scores.

    Kalren received a 49: "41+ - The Iredeemable-Sue - Have you considered a PvE server?"

Genui received a 4: "1 - 10 - The Non-Sue - You've dodged all the annoying cliches and made it to the coveted rank of Non-Sue. Congratulations! Your character is likely original and well-balanced."

Moon Guard Kalren received a 24: "21 - 30 - The Mary-Sue - Whoops. Your character seems to need a little work. Your character is likely a bit unbelievable and maybe even annoying, but he or she is certainly not beyond repair. Don't give up!"

I scored as a non-sue, but dang. the section on gnomes is a tough one, as most gnomes would have lost family members in the Gnomer disaster.

    -1, baby. I win.

    • Does the character have a name highly unusual or unlikely in relation to the his or her race and area of birth?
    • Is the character's name/nickname sourced from mythology, video games, books, or anything similar?
    • Is the character plain?
    • Does the character have a strange scar or marking?
    • Is the character old by the standards of his or her race?
    • Has the character ever known any major lore characters?
    • Does the character suffer from guilt about something terrible that he or she did in the past?
      • ... and it isn't the character's fault?
    • Is the character a member of a resistance movement?

Not sure the last one counts. The Silver Hand resists the Scourge. Take that one away, and Jaero's -2.

Well I got a 37. But 27 of that was just based on being the guild leader of a military order that resisted horde and killed civilians. And having a character named after myself didn't help either.

I'd take this test with a grain of salt. I've seen it many times before, and not only is the criteria strange, it's currently out-dated for Cataclysm - no goblins or worgen.

    My score: 3

    Checkmarks:

Does the character have a body that is atypical for his or her race and age?

Arialynn is not particulary endowed in the chest area. I'm not sure whether it's common for Warcraft humans to have size D breasts as their models suggest. But I decided to check it, regardless. Too much physical exercise has kept her womanly figure more muscular than curvy. This is subject to change if she ever had a less active lifestyle.

Does it detract from the character's overall attractiveness?

I imagine slightly smaller breasts count against her in the physical attrativeness department.

    Is the character plain?

She doesn't wear make-up and her features tend to be rather austere. This can possibly catch someone's eye, or allow her to be overlooked.

    Has the character ever been...

    Well-known or a celebrity?

I struggle with questions like these, because the question I always ask is "with who?" Even as a guildleader and decorated paladin, I don't like to pretend that Arialynn is known by NPCs. So when I answer these questions, I approach it from the ER community point-of-view. Even then, checking this box feels egotistical.

Is the character of above average intelligence for his or her race?

She's no Gnomish genius, but she's quite the philosopher and strategist at times. She's still crap in the political department though, and her strict moral compass can sometimes blind her to "smarter" options.

Are the character's religious beliefs radically different from yours?

The Light doesn't exist outside the game.

Is the character very well known?

Is the character the leader of a resistance movement?

    The leader?

Again, I approached this from an ER community standpoint, not from a Warcraft NPC standpoint. Templars of the Rose can be considered a resistance movement, and I am the GM.

If the character is a Human...

Is the character especially connected to the Light?

She's one helluva healer, but constant wars keep her at constant practice. She'd be less of a healer if she didn't spend so much time in the field, and bettering her skills.

One thing that may be added in the future is marriage and pregnancy, but how those things will play out will affect the checkmarks to those questions.

    Another thing of note is that the Dawnfield family has old land claims in Lordaeron, essentially making his family name a displaced Lordaeron noble. The claims are small, but the noble title is carried with it nonetheless. I imagine this will start up an argument or two between them, when the confrontation finally comes. (;

    Steals Arias layout...

    My Score: 6

    Checkmarks:

    Is the character plain?
Is this something that has changed or will change over the course of the storyline?

Maybe? I dun know depends on what you consider plain, maybe I just thought he was plain because Id never really put any effort into RPing him before the Hell Toy storyline, hence both of those checks.

Does the character have a strange scar or marking (such as a tattoo)?
He has an old scar on his left cheek and some down his left arm. Sadly its not the cool across the eye scar, it's just there.

Is the character the last surviving member of a house/clan/family/practioner of a style of fighting or magic?
Last of his family. Hadn't really intended that but hey it happened. Seems to be a common Wow theme. Fits in great with draenei and blood elves I understand tho, the whole genocide thing. His parents were some of those that stayed in Shattrath for when the orcs attacked.

Does the character suffer from guilt about something terrible that he or she did in the past?
... and it IS the character's fault?

The Hell Toy plot if you've read it. Bad decisions all around on his part.

Are the character's religious beliefs radically different from yours?
    The Light isn't real

Does the character have a dependency or addiction that is or would be very hard to break?
Yes? Again I checked this, better than for not. Id say the Hell Toy left a distinct impression on him, and despite his better judgement even now its a good thing its gone. *checks pocket for it again*

Do you feel that characters of the appropriate sexual orientation should be drawn to the character?
Oh come on who would not be!.. Yeah well that's more a box I checked because hes a normal guy, well sort of. Hes not unattractive I cannot think of any real reason he might be such. Then again hes not drawing the ladies in with his looks, so it depends on what that checkbox really means.

If the character is a Shaman...
Can the character communicate whensoever they want with the elements?

Isn't that how it works? Have to be able to call on the elements whenever to ask them to do what you need? Ah well I checked it :)

EDIT: Apparently my score is a 7 Templars is a resistance movement as per Aria's test :)
  • January 31, 2012 3:35:24 PM EST

    My Score: 3

    Checkmarks:

Does the character have a body that is atypical for his or her race and age?

Based on the in-game models, yes. Kalentha has a more atheltic/muscular, less... curvacious, I guess, build than human female models portray.

Does it detract from the character's overall attractiveness?

    I'm guessing.

    Is the character plain?

She's not unattractive, but she wears no make-up and puts very little effort into her appearance, generally.

Does the character have a strange scar or marking?

She has a fairly intricate tattoo design all along her right arm. She also has quite a few scars, but they're not really strange.

    Has the character ever been...

    The victim of physical abuse?

    In her childhood.

An outlaw or member of organized crime?

She spent time operating as a bandit and a mercenary for a criminal organization.

Has the character ever freely, willingly and knowingly worked for an evil regime?

She knew what she was doing was wrong but chose to overlook that.

And did he or she wind up turning to the side of good?

She wound up a good-aligned character through RP.

Is the character of above average intelligence for his or her race?

She's not a genius but she is highly intelligent, considering the 'average' in WarCraft is probably pretty low if you factor in all the peasantry and whatnot.

Are the character's religious beliefs radically different from yours?

As far as I know there's no church for the Holy Light in real life.

Is the character royalty/nobility of any description?

I forgot this. Raises the score from 1 to 3.

    I stole your template too!
